How to Fix Issues With Emptying Trash on OSX

I've been struggling to empty the trash on an external drive that was formatted HFS Journaled for some time now (~4 months). So I finally remembered to google the actual error message (derp). I found this thread and started trying the suggestions. None worked until I got to this comment. Option + Empty Trash did the trick.
